Beyond These Walls

The “Beyond These Walls” simulation is a hybrid app that brings together digital interactivity with immersive role-play storytelling. Combining in-app functionality with real-world breakout activities, the experience allows groups of users to get a shared experience, which promotes discussion and eye-opening insight into the world of its characters.

The Mission

Anglicare’s mission was to increase empathy for those members of society that may face challenging situations and conditions that many of us will not understand firsthand. By working with subject matter experts both within Anglicare and our team, we were able to workshop branching narratives that were based on real-world predicaments and show how Anglicare is able to provide assistance to the community in different ways.

The Consultation, Design & Build Process

We worked with Anglicare through the consultation, design, and build phases to bring the “Beyond These Walls” simulation to life.

Starting with a prototype to test the concept with a group of users, we then moved on to flesh out the full app, which contains three characters and their stories. Users can participate completely digitally or through a hybrid session run by Anglicare, which involves physical activities brought to life in a tangible manner.

Through the process of user testing and post-evaluation surveys, we got great feedback and were able to see how the app in practice delivered spectacularly on the goals of the organization.

The Technical Details

Technically, the system was built as a custom web app with a fully bespoke backend to allow for the management of access codes, sales, and registrations. The app is compatible across all web browser platforms, including desktop, and primarily mobile. Google Analytics tracks usage behaviour and allows for real-time event tracking.

The Outcomes

As part of Anglicare’s community engagement, the simulation allows for new and interesting ways for school children to gain an understanding of the community and different issues faced by others, which they may not otherwise be aware of. Feedback showed that participants were more likely to engage proactively in providing volunteer support as a result of going through the experience, and also gained great empathy for other members of society that they may not necessarily understand otherwise.
