Build The Train

Interactive Touchscreen Game

We worked with Downer Group to conceptualize, design, and build an interactive touch screen experience for visitors to their Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) Visitor Centre.

A key task in the consultancy phase was to identify what sort of engagement piece would work well to suit the use case, considering that visitors were most likely only going to enter the center one or two times. The game needed to be immediately intuitive, easy to pick up, and be suitable for a range of age groups with a realistically short play length.

With those factors in mind, we worked on a concept that would be very quick to play but still provide educational value.

Players of the “Build a Train” game learn about the different components of the train in a hands-on way, having to rotate them into place to snap securely into the construction.

Graphically we kept the appeal big, bright, and simple, and the gameplay experience approachable – limiting it to around one to two minutes in length.

“Having no experience of game creation, Code and Visual did an excellent job of helping us through the process in the creation of a game for our new Visitor Centre. The end result is a product that is generating lots of attention.”

It was important that onboarding could be kept simple and quick, reducing any friction for would-be participants to begin playing. With this in mind, a single interaction mechanic was chosen which required players to simply rotate the components with the touchscreen, moving them up, down, left, and right to get the correct orientation. After all the pieces are placed, players were given a final score, factoring in each of their attempts and combining them into a combined ranking.

Technically, we worked with the Unity engine to rapidly build and prototype the core game mechanic. With this proof of concept approved, the art direction was completed and 3D models were custom-built to suit the aesthetic we envisioned.

This project required a well-executed plan to ensure we could deliver a suitable end-product by the client’s necessary timeline. We achieved this by strategic consultation to define and clearly express the project goals and requirements up front. This allowed us to follow through with the creative and technical work in a purposeful and methodical way, which we successfully achieved.
