Onboarding for the Beyond These Walls App

Overview

Anglicare engaged us to design and build a complete digital solution for Beyond These Walls, a web app experience. As part of this service, we also created a custom-designed onboarding EDM (Electronic Direct Mail) that delivered unique access codes, guided users through setup, and extended the brand experience seamlessly from purchase to play.

Challenge

The key challenge was to develop a dynamic, flexible, and visually engaging email template that would work reliably across diverse email clients — including Gmail and Outlook — which are notoriously restrictive in terms of design capabilities. The EDM needed to be responsive for both desktop and mobile, support light and dark modes, and remain visually aligned with the creative style of the Beyond These Walls brand.

Approach

  • Custom Development: Rather than relying on a third-party system, we developed a custom email template in raw HTML and integrated it with a bespoke PHP-driven purchase workflow.
  • Dynamic Content: Each email pulled in unique access codes tied to the user’s purchase, including the number of playthroughs purchased.
  • Cross-Client Support: The design was carefully tested and implemented to ensure compatibility with widely used email clients of the time, balancing best practice functionality with visual creativity.
  • Responsive Design: The template adapted cleanly across mobile and desktop, providing a smooth experience regardless of device.
  • Onboarding Journey: The EDM explained how the app worked, provided login instructions, and guided users on how to add the app to their phone’s home screen.
  • Light & Dark Mode: With user preferences in mind, we accounted for both light and dark display settings, a forward-looking design consideration that ensured clarity and brand consistency.

 

Outcome

The result was a fun, engaging, and highly functional onboarding email that seamlessly connected the user journey – from purchasing access, to receiving instructions and entering the web app. By focusing on clarity, accessibility, and strong design fundamentals, we created an EDM that not only delivered essential information but also reinforced Anglicare’s brand experience.
