VR Drone Rip Experience

As part of a range of creative eLearning and engagement projects, we built this award-winning VR Drone experience for SLSNSW to introduce people to the role that drone pilots play to help keep Australian beaches safe. We designed the app to deliver key messages for a broad audience, adding in interactive points to increase engagement and promote active learning. Once they’ve fitted their VR headset, viewers are met by a pair of friendly drone pilots that welcome them to the beach, taking them for an aerial tour from the drones-eye-view, in 360 degrees. Users are prompted to take photos of certain scenes within the experience to show their understanding of the safety messages being taught. The VR video was shot with a custom drone rig, carrying a 360 camera which caught the action over two days of filming at Dee Why beach. Our team worked the script down to a concise 6-minute edit, and then added in an interactive layer with Unity3D as part of the final app, built for Oculus Quest headsets. We also produced a special Cardboard version as a 360 video, to be played on custom goggles made especially for SLSNSW. Head over to the Surf Life Saving Beach Safety Hub to view some behind the scenes footage, as we describe the process of planning, capturing and building this unique VR experience.
